Plan Your Visit
to Damanhur

Everything you need to know for a meaningful, well-prepared visit to one of the world's most extraordinary intentional communities — the Temples of Humankind, the Sacred Wood, and the living experiment of Damanhurian life.

Visit Overview

Damanhur receives thousands of visitors from around the world each year — from curious travelers who encounter it by chance to researchers, spiritual seekers, journalists, architects, and artists who have been drawn to it by decades of international reputation. All are welcome, and all will find something here that surprises them.

🏛️

The Temples of Humankind

The crown jewel of any Damanhur visit — a vast complex of underground halls hand-carved and decorated by community members over more than three decades. Nine interconnected halls spread across 8,500 square meters beneath a wooded hillside, filled with mosaics, paintings, stained glass, sculptures, and sacred technology. UNESCO has cited it as one of the most significant artistic and spiritual works of the contemporary world.

🌿

The Sacred Wood

Surrounding the community's main site is the Sacred Wood — a living outdoor temple where the community conducts seasonal ceremonies and where visitors can walk among ancient trees, sacred stones, Selfic structures, and natural artworks. The wood is maintained as a living spiritual landscape, and walking through it with awareness provides an experience quite different from ordinary nature walking.

👥

Community Life

Beyond the artistic and natural wonders, Damanhur's most distinctive offering is the opportunity to encounter the community itself — real people who have chosen an extraordinary way of life and are happy to share it with respectful visitors. Meals, conversations, workshops, and participation in community activities provide the most intimate and ultimately most memorable dimension of any Damanhur visit.

When to Visit

Damanhur is open year-round and each season offers a distinct and valuable experience. There is no wrong time to visit — though some seasons are busier, some richer in outdoor activities, and some marked by specific festivals that add extraordinary dimensions to any stay.

🌸 Spring — March to May

Best for: Outdoor activities, wildflower season, post-winter freshness

★★★★★

Spring is magnificent in Valchiusella — the valley erupts in wildflowers, the Sacred Wood is at its most primally beautiful, and the community is energized by the renewal of outdoor agricultural work. Visitor numbers are moderate, making this an excellent time for personal attention and intimate community contact. The vernal equinox ceremony (late March) is one of the year's most significant events.

☀️ Summer — June to August

Best for: Full program availability, outdoor life, long evenings

★★★★★

Summer is Damanhur's busiest season and for good reason. The community's full program of workshops, seminars, and courses is active. Long evenings in the valley are exquisite. The summer solstice festival (late June) is extraordinary. Accommodation should be booked well in advance. Temperatures in the valley can be warm but rarely extreme.

🍂 Autumn — September to November

Best for: Harvest festivals, fewer crowds, cool weather

★★★★★

Autumn brings the harvest season — a deeply communal, joyful time when the entire community is focused on preserving summer's abundance. The valley's forests turn spectacular colors. Visitor numbers drop after September, making October and November excellent for those seeking a quieter, more intimate experience. The chestnut harvest festival is a wonderful community event.

❄️ Winter — December to February

Best for: Deep community immersion, winter solstice, intimacy

★★★★★

Winter is the quietest season for visitors and the most inward for the community. Some outdoor activities are limited by weather, but the community's indoor life — study groups, artistic projects, shared meals by the fire, deep conversations — is richest in winter. The winter solstice ceremony (December 21) is profound and intimate. Fewer visitors means more personal community contact.

Dress Code & Etiquette

Damanhur's community norms reflect its values — respect for the sacred, presence in the moment, genuine engagement with people rather than mere consumption of experience. Following these guidelines ensures a meaningful experience for both you and the community.

👗

Dress Code

There is no strict dress code at Damanhur — the community values personal expression and you may wear what feels appropriate to you. For Temple tours, modest dress is appreciated (shoulders and knees covered) out of respect for the sacred space. For outdoor activities, comfortable practical clothing and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. The valley can be cool even in summer — bring layers.

🤫

In the Temples

The Temples of Humankind are active sacred spaces, not museums. Please maintain a spirit of reverence throughout your visit — quiet voices, no running, full attention to your guide, and respectful treatment of all surfaces and objects. Photography is permitted in specific areas and prohibited in others; your guide will be clear about this. Never touch the frescoes or mosaic surfaces.

🍽️

At Meals

Communal meals are among the most important social rituals of Damanhurian life. Please arrive on time, put phones away, and engage with the people at your table. Questions are welcome and conversation is encouraged — but excessive noise or behavior that disrupts others' experience is not. If you have specific dietary requirements, notify the kitchen team in advance.

On Photography

The Temples of Humankind are among the most photographed spiritual spaces in Europe — yet photography can interfere with the quality of presence that makes a visit truly meaningful. We ask visitors to be intentional about when and what they photograph. Some of the most powerful experiences in the Temples happen in moments of complete presence that a camera would interrupt. Consider giving yourself at least part of the visit as a photography-free experience and notice the difference in the depth of engagement that follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions we most commonly receive from visitors planning their first trip to Damanhur. If your question isn't answered here, please contact us directly — we're delighted to help.

Do I need to share or agree with Damanhur's spiritual beliefs to visit? +
Absolutely not. Damanhur welcomes visitors of all beliefs, faiths, and philosophical persuasions — including none. The community does not proselytize or pressure visitors to adopt any particular worldview. You are welcome to visit purely for the extraordinary art and architecture, for curiosity about community life, for research, or for any other reason that brings you. Your beliefs are entirely your own and will be respected throughout your visit.
How long should I plan for a Temple tour? +
Standard Temple tours last approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. This includes time for the guide's commentary, question periods, and a few moments of quiet presence in the most significant halls. We recommend arriving 15 minutes before your tour time. For those who want a more extensive experience, extended tours of 4-5 hours are available — contact us for details.
Is Damanhur accessible for visitors with mobility limitations? +
The Temples of Humankind were built in a hillside over several decades and include staircases and areas with uneven terrain. We can make some accommodations for visitors with mobility challenges, but full Temple access may not be possible for those who cannot manage stairs. Please contact us in advance and we will work with you to create the best possible experience within your specific needs. The Sacred Wood and community facilities are more accessible.
Can children visit the Temples? +
Yes! Children are genuinely welcome at Damanhur and often have powerful responses to the Temples. We recommend the full Temple tour for children aged 8 and above; for younger children, please discuss options with us in advance. Children tend to be particularly captivated by the stained glass works and the mineral hall. The community school at Damanhur will occasionally have activities specifically for visiting children — ask when booking.
What language are tours conducted in? +
Tours are available in Italian, English, French, German, and Spanish. For other languages, we can sometimes arrange translation — contact us. Advance booking allows us to ensure a guide fluent in your preferred language is available. Tour quality is excellent in all available languages; our guides are experienced interpreters of a complex and multidimensional subject.
Where can I stay during my visit? +
Damanhur offers accommodation in community guest rooms and apartments, ranging from simple private rooms to larger apartments for families or small groups. All include access to community meals. There are also good hotels and agriturismo options in the Valchiusella Valley and in Ivrea (25 minutes away) for those who prefer external accommodation while visiting the community during the day.
