Damanhur is one of the world's most studied and documented intentional communities — a federation of approximately 400–600 residents across 4 nuclei in the Valchiusella valley of Piedmont, Italy, approximately 50km north of Turin.
Founded on 26 December 1975 by Oberto Airaudi (Falco Tarassaco), it describes itself as a federation of communities, a spiritual people, and a living laboratory for the future of humanity.
Damanhur officially states ~600 residents. Academic studies (Palmisano & Pannofino, Palgrave 2022) place the figure closer to ~400. Both figures are cited throughout this site — the discrepancy reflects different counting methodologies.
Born in Torino on 23 June 1950, Oberto Airaudi was a healer, philosopher, writer, artist, and visionary founder of Damanhur. He adopted the community name Falco Tarassaco — Falcon Dandelion — reflecting his capacity for aerial vision and rootedness in the earth simultaneously.
From childhood, Airaudi reported extraordinary inner experiences that shaped his understanding of consciousness, time, and the structure of the cosmos. He authored over 150 books on philosophy, cosmology, and Damanhurian spirituality.
As a visual artist, his work appears throughout the Temples of Humankind — including the central mosaic programmes of the Hall of Metals and the Androgyne Hall.
Falco Tarassaco passed away on 23 June 2013 — on his 63rd birthday — from cancer. He died surrounded by the community he had spent his life creating.
"We are not building a monument to the past. We are building a bridge to the future — underground, invisible, against all reason."Oberto Airaudi (Falco Tarassaco), c.1985
