Damanhur has written and ratified eleven constitutions since its founding in 1975. Each has been drafted by the community, debated in open assembly, and signed collectively. The willingness to rewrite the rules is as fundamental to Damanhur as any of the rules themselves.
The 11th Constitution, signed 11 June 2019, is publicly available in full on damanhur.org. It governs all aspects of community life — citizenship, property, rights, governance structure, and the Credito currency system.
Official SourceThe 11th Constitution explicitly protects a range of individual rights — unusually robust for an intentional community.
The Credito has been in active circulation since 2001 — Damanhur's complementary internal currency, earned through community contribution and spent within the federation's network of enterprises, farms, and services.
The Credito model operates alongside (not instead of) the Euro. It is designed to reward community participation and strengthen the internal economic bonds of the federation. The exchange rate is maintained by the community's economic council and is subject to annual review.
Damanhur operates extensively with Euro and standard Italian and EU legal frameworks. Community members maintain personal finances and property. The Credito is a supplementary system, not a replacement for national currency.
