History of
Damanhur

From Oberto Airaudi's birth in 1950 to the federation's 50th anniversary in 2026. Every significant milestone — founding, construction, legal recognition, global expansion, and the future.

1950–1979 · The Founding
23 Jun 1950
Oberto Airaudi Born
Born in Turin, 23 June 1950. From childhood, he reported extraordinary inner experiences that shaped his understanding of consciousness, time, and the nature of reality. By 20, he was already a practising healer.
1970
First Healing Practice
Airaudi establishes a healing practice in Turin. He begins articulating the cosmological framework that will eventually become Damanhurian philosophy — drawing on esoteric traditions, personal research, and inner experience.
1975
A New Civilisation
A founding group of 24 people gathers around Airaudi's vision of building a complete civilisation from the ground up. They settle in the Valchiusella valley, chosen for its geomantic position at the intersection of synchronic lines.
26 Dec 1979
Official Foundation
Damanhur formally established on 26 December 1979. This date is adopted as the official foundation date. The first constitution is signed. 24 members. One shared dream.
1978–1991 · Underground Construction
1978
First Pick-Axe
Twenty-four people begin excavating beneath a Piedmont farmhouse — at night, by hand, in absolute secrecy. Earth is carried to the surface in buckets. No architects. No planning permission. Only devotion.
1979–1985
The First Halls
The Hall of Metals and Hall of Water are completed. Every surface decorated by hand — Venetian glass mosaic, Tiffany panels, fresco, and sculpture. Community members hold day jobs while digging and decorating every night.
1986–1990
Underground Expansion
Three more halls completed: Hall of Earth, Hall of Spheres, and The Labyrinth. The complex now extends across five underground levels. The Blue Temple begins construction — the largest and most challenging hall.
1988
The Credito Established
Damanhur's internal complementary currency — the Credito — enters circulation. The sixth constitution formally establishes its legal and economic framework within the federation.
1992–2001 · Discovery & Recognition
Jun 1992
Police Discovery
Italian police discover the Temples during an unrelated raid. National media frenzy follows. The community faces a four-year legal battle for recognition. The Temples are too beautiful to destroy — even the prosecuting authorities struggle with their existence.
1996
Legal Recognition
Italian courts grant full recognition of the Temples as a private artistic site. Public guided tours begin. The community opens its doors — and visitors come from around the world.
1999
UN Environment Programme
United Nations Environment Programme formally recognises Damanhur's sustainable community practices. The first international institutional acknowledgement.
2001
Guinness World Record
Certified by Guinness World Records as the world's largest underground temple complex built by a private group. International media coverage reaches 50+ countries.
2002–2012 · Global Expansion
2002
GEN Founding Member
Damanhur participates in the founding of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) — connecting 10,000+ communities in 70 countries. Damanhur's model becomes a reference point for the international ecovillage movement.
2004
Androgyne Hall Complete
The Hall of the Androgyne — the most symbolically complex hall — is completed after 12 years of work. Considered by many visitors to be the most moving space in the entire complex.
2006
Hall of Mirrors
The ninth and final originally-planned hall — the Hall of Mirrors — is completed. The Temples are now as originally envisioned, though construction of additional levels continues.
2010
WisdomLab Launches

2013–2026 · Into the Future
23 Jun 2013
