You Are Expected Here
Welcome, Senior Visitors
Damanhur has always maintained that the elders of a community carry irreplaceable value. The Federation's Guides Council specifically includes senior wisdom-keepers, and the community's decision-making processes formally honour life experience. Senior visitors arrive not as guests to be managed but as potential wisdom-bearers to be encountered.
We understand that senior visitors bring both gifts and needs that differ from younger travellers. You may arrive with a lifetime's worth of questions, hard-won perspectives on what matters, and a deep desire for experiences that feel genuinely meaningful rather than merely entertaining.
You may also arrive with physical considerations — mobility variations, the need for more rest, dietary requirements, medical routines, and a preference for pace over intensity. All of this is not a barrier at Damanhur but part of how we calibrate an experience that genuinely serves you.
Our senior programs were designed in close consultation with senior community members and visiting elder groups over many years. They are not simplified versions of mainstream programs — they are distinct offerings built around the specific gifts and requirements of people who have lived long and thoughtfully.
"At 74, I had given up expecting to be surprised by life. Damanhur surprised me. Not because of anything dramatic, but because of the quality of attention the community gave me — as though my life experience was genuinely interesting to them."
— Retired Professor, Glasgow, 2024Full Accessibility
Wheelchair-accessible pathways to key sites, accessible accommodation, and a dedicated support coordinator for any mobility needs.

Dietary Support
All dietary requirements accommodated with advance notice. Meals are organic, nourishing, and prepared with care for those with health considerations.

The nearest hospital is 35 minutes away. Community first-aid support is available 24/7. We hold all relevant medical information securely.
Personal Companion Option
A dedicated community member can accompany senior visitors throughout their stay for those who prefer personalised support.
Gentle Immersion
Substantive cultural and spiritual encounter with the community is not sacrificed for comfort — we achieve both simultaneously.
Underground Wonders
Accessible Temple Tours
The Temples of Humankind — nine underground halls carved entirely by hand over 30 years — represent one of the most extraordinary artistic achievements of the 20th century. Senior visitors experience this wonder at a pace and with support appropriate to their needs.
Hall of Earth Tour
A carefully curated tour of Damanhur's most accessible Temple halls, specifically selected for those with limited mobility. Experience the Hall of Earth's stunning mosaic floors, the Hall of Metals' extraordinary stained glass, and the meditation ante-chambers — all reachable with minimal stair navigation.
Accessibility: 8 steps maximum, handrails throughout. Wheelchair alternative route available for most sections with advance notice.
Senior Full Temple Experience
A paced visit to all nine Temple halls, specifically designed for senior visitors. The guide builds in seated rest moments in specially prepared spaces, extended time in each hall for unhurried contemplation, and a mid-tour refreshment break in the community café adjacent to the Temple entrance.
Accessibility: Up to 40 steps total, always with handrail. Portable seating carried throughout. Alternative route for wheelchair users covers 6 of 9 halls.
Private Senior Temple Visit
A completely personalised Temple visit for individuals or small groups (up to 6), with a guide dedicated exclusively to your party. You set the pace, pause when you wish, ask every question you've ever had, and experience the Temples as a genuine contemplative encounter rather than a guided tour.
Accessibility: Entirely planned around your specific needs and mobility situation with advance consultation. No standard route applies.

The Sacred Land
Gentle Sacred Woods Walks
Damanhur's Sacred Woods span 250 hectares of ancient forest, meadows, and ceremonial glades. Multiple paths of varying difficulty allow senior visitors to experience this remarkable living artwork at whatever level is appropriate for them.
The Gentle Garden Walk
A short 800-metre loop through Damanhur's cultivated gardens, orchards, and herb beds. Entirely flat, paved surfaces with benches every 200 metres. Perfect for those who want to be outdoors and among growing things without significant exertion.
Sacred Grove Discovery
A guided 1.5km walk along level woodland paths to two of the most significant ceremonial spaces in the Sacred Woods — the Grove of the Sun and the Stone Circle. Light gravel surfaces, with one optional 15-step descent to a meditation pool.
Labyrinth & Meadow Circuit
A 2km walk combining the outdoor stone labyrinth with a meadow circuit offering long views across the valley. One gentle uphill section (3% gradient, 200m) leads to the most panoramic viewpoint on Damanhur's land. Five benches strategically placed.
Seasonal Highlight Walk
A curated walk that changes with the seasons — spring flower emergence, summer full canopy, autumn colours, winter bare-branch beauty. The guide focuses on what is most remarkable about the land at this exact moment. Distance and pace set by the group.
Wheelchair-Accessible Routes
We have developed two dedicated wheelchair-accessible circuits through Damanhur's Sacred Woods — a 600m garden route and a 1.2km expanded circuit. Both are paved with compacted gravel suitable for standard wheelchair use, with wider turning points at intervals. Electric mobility scooters can be accommodated on both routes with advance notice.
Our accessible routes were designed with input from the local disability access consultancy and have been tested by wheelchair users across a range of ages and conditions. We actively seek feedback to continue improving accessibility throughout the land.
Deep Conversation
Wisdom Circle Conversations
Some of the most profound experiences senior visitors report from Damanhur are not the Temple or the woods, but the conversations — seated, unhurried encounters with community members who are genuinely interested in what a long life has taught them.
Philosophy of Time
A facilitated dialogue on how Damanhurian cosmology understands past lives, future existences, and the nature of time itself — in conversation with a senior community philosopher. Senior visitors are invited to share their own relationship with time and memory.
Life in Community
An honest conversation about what it means to choose intentional community — the joys, the challenges, what was sacrificed, what was gained. Led by community members who have lived at Damanhur for 20+ years, with open Q&A.
Death & What Follows
Damanhur has a rich and unsentimental relationship with death, dying, and the continuation of consciousness. This conversation — deeply respectful and genuinely open — addresses questions many senior visitors have but rarely find a good space for.
Spiritual Encounter
A conversation between senior visitors and Damanhur spiritual practitioners about different paths, what they've encountered, what they believe, what remains mysterious. Mutual curiosity rather than instruction governs these sessions.
Legacy & What We Leave
What do we want to leave behind? How does Damanhur think about its own legacy? A practical and philosophical dialogue about creation, contribution, and the traces we leave in the world after we've gone.
Sound Healing Circle
A gentle introduction to Damanhur's sound healing traditions — Tibetan bowls, overtone chanting, plant music — with time for questions, discussion of participants' own experiences of music and healing, and a closing meditation.
"I came expecting to observe something interesting. What I didn't expect was to feel so genuinely met — as though my 76 years of questions were finally encountering people who had seriously tried to answer them."
— Retired Physician, Vienna, 2025Creative Expression
Craft & Creative Sessions
Damanhur's artistic tradition encompasses every medium imaginable — and our creative sessions for senior visitors are designed to be genuinely engaging rather than therapeutic filler. You will make something real, guided by working artists who take your creative expression seriously.
Mosaic — Seated Workshop
The same tesserae and techniques used in the Temples of Humankind, in a fully seated, no-standing-required format. You design and create a small mosaic panel (approximately 20x20cm) over three hours, guided by a practising mosaic artist. All materials provided. Work is grouted and wrapped to travel home safely.
Watercolour & Sacred Forms
A 2-hour watercolour session exploring Damanhur's symbolic vocabulary — spirals, labyrinths, elemental symbols — as subjects for loose, meditative painting. All levels welcome, including complete beginners. The focus is on process and presence rather than product, though the products are often beautiful.
Clay Hand-Building
Working with local terracotta clay to hand-build small vessels, tiles, or sculptural forms. No wheel, no standing required — everything is done at a comfortable table with tools that require gentle pressure rather than strength. Pieces are air-dried and can be collected or shipped after firing.
Journal & Contemplative Writing
A structured writing session drawing from Damanhurian philosophical prompts, combined with gentle guided reflection and group sharing. Suitable for those who love language, memoir, poetry, or simply want to process their Damanhur experience in writing. Beautiful handmade journals provided.
Sacred Music Listening
Not a performance class but a deep listening session — exploring Damanhur's plant music recordings, compositions inspired by synchronic lines, and choral works created by the community over 50 years. With guided listening exercises and optional vocal participation. Comfortable armchairs, excellent acoustics.
Textile & Weaving Circle
Working with natural fibres using traditional drop-spindle and hand-loom techniques. Damanhur has its own textile tradition using plant-dyed wools and linens. The session is as much about conversation as craft — a true circle in which making and talking happen simultaneously.

"I have travelled to monasteries, ashrams, intentional communities on three continents. Damanhur is unlike any of them — not because of what it claims to be, but because of what it demonstrably is."
