Why We Retreat
Retreat Philosophy
The word "retreat" in most traditions means withdrawal — a stepping back from the world to recover a quieter self. At Damanhur, we understand retreat differently: as an advance into depth, a movement toward greater reality rather than away from ordinary life.
Falco Tarassaco, Damanhur's founder, often said that most people are living at a fraction of their actual capacity — not because they lack ability, but because the conditions of modern life systematically prevent the kind of attention and presence that activates deeper human faculties.
A Damanhur retreat creates the conditions for this activation. By removing habitual distractions, by placing a person in physical surroundings of extraordinary beauty and intentional meaning, by providing companions who are genuinely engaged in the same inquiry, and by structuring time so that different layers of experience become available, a retreat opens access to dimensions of self that remain dormant under ordinary circumstances.
This is not therapeutic language, though the experience is often deeply healing. It is a more precise claim: that human beings have capabilities — perceptual, creative, relational, spiritual — that are simply not reachable without extended immersion in the right conditions. Damanhur has spent 50 years learning to create those conditions.
"We do not offer retreat as rest. We offer it as expedition — into the territory of yourself that ordinary life doesn't have time for. Come prepared to encounter something real."
— Senior Retreat Facilitator, DamanhurDepth Over Width
We do fewer things and go deeper into each. A schedule that overfills is one that prevents genuine encounter.
Living Community Contact
Every retreat participant has genuine contact with community members going about real life — not a constructed experience.
Embodied Learning
Intellectual understanding is a beginning. We use the body, the land, the arts, and ceremony to install what the mind alone cannot hold.
Transformation Over Information
We are not trying to give you more data about spiritual life. We are trying to change the quality of your experience of it.
Integration by Design
Every retreat includes dedicated time for integration — for making meaning of experiences before you return to daily life.
Open Tradition
Damanhur's spiritual path is its own — but retreat participants are not required to adopt any belief. Genuine curiosity is sufficient.

Seven Days of Depth
Week-Long Deep Dives
A week at Damanhur gives time for the deeper transformation that a weekend only hints at. Something shifts after the fifth day — a settled quality, a changed relationship to time, an openness that shorter programs cannot fully develop.
The Damanhur Initiation Week
Seven days moving through every dimension of Damanhurian life — the spiritual traditions, the artistic heritage, the governance systems, the ecological practices, and the everyday human reality of living in an intentional community of 600+ people. This is not a tourist program — it is a genuine encounter with a different way of being human.
- Three Temple interior visits (morning, afternoon, and evening ceremony)
- Three Sacred Woods walks with different guides and themes
- Full-day participation in community working life (kitchen, gardens, or studio)
- Three Esoteric School sessions with senior practitioners
- Individual consultation with a community elder
- Participation in one community meeting or governance event
- Plant music concert and sound healing session
- Closing ceremony and integration session
- All accommodation and meals included

Silent Contemplation Week
A largely silent week in Damanhur's quieter spaces — the meditation gardens, the libraries, the woodland paths. Structured around daily individual contemplation time, one group meditation per day, and personal consultation sessions. Meals are taken in gentle silence. For those who need genuine quiet more than content.

- Biweekly individual consultation with a senior practitioner
- Free access to all outdoor spaces and meditation areas

The Wheel of the Year
Seasonal Retreats
Damanhur's ceremonial calendar is built around the eight cardinal points of the solar year. Seasonal retreats position participants at the exact moment of cosmic transition — the solstices, equinoxes, and the cross-quarter days — within a community that takes these moments with extraordinary seriousness.
Winter Solstice
The year's longest night brings Damanhur's most emotionally resonant ceremony — the return of light. Three days of preparation, ceremony, and celebration around the December 21st point.
Spring Equinox
Renewal, planting, and the activation of the year's projects. A four-day retreat that combines ceremony with practical intention-setting and the community's traditional spring renewal rituals.
Summer Solstice
Damanhur's largest and most celebratory seasonal event — days of music, fire, community gathering, and the extraordinary energy of maximum solar presence. A five-day retreat that culminates in the solstice night fire ceremony.
Autumn Equinox
Harvest, completion, and the honoured descent into darkness. A three-day retreat exploring what the year has produced and what must be released before winter's contemplative time begins.
Cross-Quarter Retreats
In addition to the four cardinal points, Damanhur marks the four cross-quarter days (approximately February 2nd, May 1st, August 1st, and November 1st) with smaller, more intimate ceremonies open to retreat participants. These events require a minimum 2-night stay and are not available as day visits. Pricing: €280–€360 depending on accommodation type.

Private Custom Retreats
For individuals, couples, families, or professional groups who want an experience designed entirely around their specific needs, questions, and intentions — a private Damanhur retreat goes further than any standard programme can reach.
Private retreat design begins with an extended consultation — typically a 90-minute video conversation with our retreat director — in which we explore what you are genuinely seeking. Not what sounds impressive, or what most people ask for, but what you actually need.
From that foundation, we build a programme that might draw on any combination of Damanhur's offerings: Temple access at times normally closed to groups; private consultations with specific community elders; participation in ceremonies not open to standard retreat groups; access to archives and research materials; time in specific locations chosen for their energetic qualities.
Private retreats also allow us to address professional inquiries — architects who want to understand the Temples' construction methodology; researchers studying intentional communities; therapists wanting to understand Damanhurian approaches to relationship and healing; educators exploring alternative models; business innovators studying Damanhur's governance systems.
"I came as a sociologist expecting a research visit. I left having experienced something that permanently altered my understanding of human community — and of myself. The private format made this possible in a way no group programme could have."

Retreat Testimonials
The best measure of a retreat's value is what participants take home with them — not knowledge accumulated, but quality of life changed. These are some of the accounts that arrived in the months after a Damanhur retreat.
"I have done meditation retreats in Burma, yoga retreats in India, and silent retreats in California. Damanhur is categorically different from all of them — more layered, more surprising, more genuinely challenging. I came away with questions I'm still living into a year later."
— Psychotherapist, London · Week-Long Retreat 2024"The Private Couples Retreat was the best thing my partner and I have done in twenty years together. Not because everything was comfortable — it wasn't always — but because we were finally in a context that supported genuine honesty. Something opened that is still open."
— Architect & Lawyer, Barcelona · Private Retreat 2025"I came to write my doctoral thesis on intentional communities. I stayed for the Winter Solstice retreat on impulse. The ceremony that night was unlike anything I have encountered in twelve years of studying spiritual communities. My thesis chapter on Damanhur took six rewrites."
— PhD Researcher, University of Amsterdam · Research + Seasonal Retreat"The Artist-in-Residence week gave me more material — visual, emotional, conceptual — than two years of working alone in my studio. And the community's reception of my work at the end-of-week show was the most generous and thoughtful critical response I've ever received."
— Painter, Brooklyn · Artist Residence Week 2025"I arrived the week after my father died, not entirely sure why. I left having been held by an entire community in a way my own family couldn't quite manage. The Grief Retreat programme was not about Damanhur's beliefs — it was simply about grief, and it helped."
— Filmmaker, Dublin · Grief & Transition Retreat 2024"Our leadership team came as sceptics. We left having witnessed a governance system that makes our own look primitive. The open conversation with Damanhur's council members — the honesty, the intelligence, the genuine disagreements handled gracefully — was worth the entire trip."
