Sustainability
at Damanhur

Damanhur has practised organic farming, renewable energy, and bioregional ecology since its founding in 1975 — not as ideology but as philosophy. The principle: if you are building a civilisation, you build it as if it must last.

In 2002, Damanhur became a founding member of the Global Ecovillage Network — the international body connecting over 10,000 sustainable communities across 70 countries. The EDE (Ecovillage Design Education) programme runs annually at Damanhur and is GEN-accredited.

Growing Food
for 500 People

Damanhur has operated certified organic farms since 1975 — producing the majority of the community's food in the Valchiusella valley.

🌾
Cereal Crops
Spelt, emmer, and heritage wheat varieties. Stoneground at the community mill. Used for all community bread and pasta.
🫒
Olive Oil
A traditional Piedmontese olive grove produces cold-pressed olive oil for the community and the farm shop. Available to visitors.
🍷
Biodynamic Wine
A small biodynamic vineyard produces community wine for ceremony and meals.
🥗
Vegetable Gardens
Large kitchen gardens supply fresh vegetables to the community kitchen year-round. Zero food miles.
🍯
Honey & Bees
Damanhur maintains a network of hives throughout the Valchiusella valley — pollination research and honey production.
🌿
Medicinal Herbs
Traditional medicinal herb garden maintained by the healing arts practitioners at the Etulte nucleus.

Energy
Independence

Solar Array
Photovoltaic installation across nuclei roofs — generating a significant proportion of the federation's electricity needs.
Micro-Hydroelectric
The Valchiusella stream runs through Damanhur's territory. A small-scale hydroelectric installation supplements solar generation year-round.
Wood Biomass
Local forestry supplies wood biomass for heating — managed on a sustainable rotation cycle with replanting programmes.
Passive Design
All new buildings at Damanhur are designed to passive house standards — maximising natural light, insulation, and thermal mass.
Water Management
A comprehensive bioregional water management system — rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, and natural filtration.
Transport
Community electric vehicle fleet and carpooling system reduces private car use. Ivrea train connection for longer journeys.

Building with
the Earth

Bio-architecture is taught as part of the Academy's Sacred Architecture school — the principle that buildings should be designed to support the life and wellbeing of their inhabitants, using natural materials, organic forms, and sacred geometry.

All construction at Damanhur since the 1980s has incorporated bio-architectural principles. The nuclei buildings use stone, wood, rammed earth, and lime plaster — materials from within the Valchiusella valley where possible.

Sacred Architecture School
The Temples Underground

The Temples of Humankind are themselves the ultimate bio-architectural achievement — a system of underground spaces designed to be in permanent dialogue with the earth, the water table, and the geological energy of the Valchiusella valley.

EDE 2026

Bio-architecture is a core module of the EDE 2026 programme (8 Aug–5 Sep). GEN-accredited. See Programmes for details.

Global Ecovillage Network

GEN Founding
Member — 2002

Damanhur helped found the Global Ecovillage Network in 2002. GEN now connects 10,000+ communities across 70 countries.

The Global Ecovillage Network (GEN) is the world's primary network of sustainable intentional communities — founded with Damanhur as a charter member. Damanhur continues to host GEN's EDE (Ecovillage Design Education) programme annually.

GEN membership means Damanhur's sustainability practices and community model are documented, shared, and applied globally. The EDE curriculum co-developed at Damanhur has been taught in communities on six continents.
