Damanhur›Community Life

400–600 People,
One Vision

Damanhur is not a utopian experiment living in isolation — it is a functioning federation of communities that has operated continuously for 50 years, producing art, growing food, educating children, caring for elders, and maintaining its own legal, economic, and governance systems in parallel with the wider world.

The community receives 15,000–20,000 visitors per year from over 80 countries, has UN ECOSOC Special Consultative Status, and has been studied in the first dedicated academic monograph from Palgrave Macmillan (2022).

The
Four Nuclei

Each nucleus has its own character, gardens, workshops, and contribution to the federation — connected by shared governance, the Credito, and the common vision.

Damanhur Damjl
Primary Nucleus — Founded 1975
Damjl

The original and largest nucleus, home to Federation headquarters, the main Welcome Center, Selfic studios, and the Temples entrance. The beating heart of Damanhur.

Damanhur Damanhur Crea
Arts & Crafts Nucleus
Damanhur Crea

Home to the School of Sacred Art, the professional mosaic workshop, music production studios, and artistic ateliers. Every surface decoration in the Temples came from Crea craftspeople.

Damanhur Etulte
Healing & Research Nucleus
Etulte

The Selfic research centre — home to the seven Selfic Cabins, the plant consciousness laboratory, bioelectricity research equipment, and the healing arts practice.

Damanhur Tentyris
Academy Nucleus
Tentyris

Where the eight Academy schools operate, the dream research archive is maintained, and the Mystery School residential programme is hosted. The intellectual and esoteric core of Damanhur.

Democratic Self-Governance

Eleven Constitutions —
A Living Tradition

Fifty years of democratic experiment, encoded in 11 constitutions. Each rewritten by the community itself, debated in open assembly, and signed collectively.

1975
First Constitution
The founding constitution — 24 signatories. Established the principles of 'spiritual, artistic, scientific, and social research' as Damanhur's core mission.
1979
Second Constitution
Formalised the federation structure. Established the role of King Guide (Falco Tarassaco) alongside elected councils.
1983
Third–Fifth
Three constitutions in four years — reflecting rapid growth and the need to codify governance as the community expanded to multiple nuclei.
1988
Sixth Constitution
Established the Credito as the internal currency and formalised the four-tiered membership structure.
1992
Seventh — Post-Discovery
Rewritten after the police discovery of the Temples — establishing legal transparency and public relations policies for the first time.
1998
Eighth–Tenth
A period of democratic refinement — the Oracle ceremony began informing constitutional decisions through community-wide spiritual consultation.
11 Jun 2019
Eleventh Constitution
The current constitution — signed 11 June 2019. Reflects 50 years of learning. Publicly available in full on the Damanhur website.
Damanhur 11th Constitution signing 2019
"The Constitution of Damanhur is a living document — it changes because the community changes. We have never been afraid to rewrite the rules we live by."
Damanhur community member, 2019

An Alternative
Economy

The Credito is Damanhur's internal complementary currency — in active circulation since 2001. Earned through community contribution, spent within the Federation's network of enterprises, farms, workshops, and services.

The Credito model has been studied and adapted by other intentional communities worldwide. It operates alongside (not instead of) the Euro — providing an additional economic layer that rewards participation and strengthens internal community bonds.

How the Credito Works

Work hours, skills, and community service are converted to Credito at agreed rates. Credito can be spent at Damanhur's organic farm shop, restaurant, craft workshops, and internal services. Exchange rate with Euro is maintained by the community's economic council.

Community Council
Elected annually. All major decisions require council approval and can be referred to community-wide vote.
The Oracle
Annual ceremony of collective spiritual consultation — has informed constitutional changes since 1988.
Citizenship Pathway
Open to all who complete a residency programme. Full citizenship requires 1–3 years of community life.
Community Enterprises
Organic farming, restaurant, print workshop, school, Selfic studio — all operated as community enterprises.

Citizenship
Pathway

Damanhur is genuinely open to new members. The citizenship pathway begins with a visit and leads, over time, to full federation membership.

Step 1: Visit
Come for a day visit or the One Day Visit (€140). Get a direct experience of the community, temples, and forest.
Step 2: Residency
Apply for New Life 2.0 (4 weeks, Sep 2026) or EDE (4 weeks, Aug–Sep 2026). Live, work, and study alongside the community.
Step 3: Extended Stay
After residency, request an extended stay of 3–6 months. Participate fully in community life and contribute to a nucleus.
Step 4: Citizenship
After 1–3 years of community life, apply for full citizenship. Citizenship is granted by collective community agreement.

Community
Questions

Damanhur officially states approximately 600 residents. Academic studies (Palmisano & Pannofino, Palgrave 2022) place the figure closer to ~400. Both figures are cited — the discrepancy reflects different counting methodologies (who counts as a 'resident').
There is no waiting list as such — but the citizenship pathway takes 1–3 years of community life. Begin with a residency programme (New Life 2.0 or EDE) and discuss citizenship interest with the Welcome Center team.
Yes. Damanhur has children growing up within the community. Families are welcome and there is an internal school. Contact welcome@dhwelcome.org to discuss family arrangements.
No. Damanhur is not a communal-property community in the traditional sense. Members maintain personal property and finances, while contributing to the community through the Credito system and shared work.
Damanhur is not affiliated with any established religion. It describes itself as a 'spiritual people' with its own cosmology, philosophy, and practice — developed over 50 years and detailed in the Academy schools. Members from all religious backgrounds (and none) live in the community.
Yes — members are free to come and go. Damanhur has operated openly to visitors since 1996. Academic researchers have had unrestricted access. Former members exist and some have been publicly critical — their perspectives are documented in our Research Hub.
