Residency at
Damanhur

Step beyond tourism into genuine community life — sharing meals, work, celebrations, and the daily richness of one of the world's most extraordinary intentional communities.

What is Residency?

Residency at Damanhur means living as a genuine participant in community life — not as a tourist consuming an experience but as a temporary member of a nucleo, contributing to the community's work and receiving the full richness of community support in return.

Beyond Tourism

Even the most thorough tourist visit to Damanhur remains essentially an observation from outside. Residency changes this fundamentally — you wake in a community home, eat breakfast with the people you'll work and live with all day, contribute to the work that keeps the community running, participate in evening gatherings and cultural events, and sleep knowing that tomorrow will bring another day of genuine shared life.

This immersive quality is what makes Damanhur residency genuinely transformative for those who approach it with openness. The insights that emerge from actually living in community — about one's own patterns, assumptions, and capacities — are simply not available to day visitors, however attentive they may be.

Who Comes for Residency

Residents at Damanhur come from an extraordinary diversity of backgrounds — young people exploring alternatives to conventional career paths; mid-life professionals seeking renewal or direction; retirees wanting to use their wisdom and skills in community context; families wanting to give their children an alternative educational experience; artists, researchers, activists, and spiritual seekers of every description.

What they share is not a specific background or belief system but a quality of genuine curiosity — about community life, about themselves, about what is possible when human beings commit to living and growing together with real intention. This quality of curiosity, more than any specific skill or experience, is what makes for a good resident at Damanhur.

Types of Residency

Damanhur offers several distinct residency formats, each designed for different needs, timeframes, and levels of commitment. Most people begin with a shorter format and return for deeper engagement as their relationship with the community develops.

Short-Term

Guest Resident

1-4 weeks · Available year-round

Ideal for first encounters with Damanhurian life. Guest residents stay in comfortable community accommodation, participate in all community meals, join the daily work rota for approximately 3 hours per day, attend evening activities, and access the Temples and other community facilities. The pace is gentle enough to allow genuine absorption without overwhelm.

  • Private room in community guesthouse
  • All meals included
  • Temple access included
  • Orientation programme provided
  • Assigned community host/mentor
Long-Term

Associate Member

6-24 months · Toward citizenship

For those seriously considering becoming full members of the Damanhurian community, the associate membership programme provides a structured pathway toward full citizenship. Associate members live as full community participants and are involved in governance, decision-making, and the community's ongoing research projects. This period is essentially a mutual evaluation — the community and the individual assess whether long-term membership is appropriate for both.

  • Full community participation rights
  • Formal mentorship toward citizenship decision
  • Access to advanced School of Meditation programmes
  • Participation in community governance structures
  • Clear pathway and timeline toward citizenship decision

Application Process

Damanhur's application process is designed to ensure a good mutual fit — that prospective residents have realistic expectations of community life, and that the community can provide what each resident genuinely needs. It is thorough but not bureaucratic.

1

Initial Visit (Required)

All residency candidates are required to make at least one prior visit to Damanhur before applying for residency. This visit — typically a full-day or multi-day experience — allows both you and the community to make an initial assessment of compatibility. Many people find that this first visit is itself transformative and gives them the information they need to decide whether to proceed.

2

Written Application

Completing a written application that addresses your background, your motivations for seeking residency at Damanhur, your skills and experience, your expectations of community life, and any specific needs or challenges you anticipate. This application helps the community team understand who you are and how best to support your residency. Applications are reviewed by the community's integration coordinator.

3

Interview

A conversation with one or two members of the community integration team — held in person during a second visit or by video call. This interview is not an evaluation to pass or fail but a genuine conversation to align expectations, answer your questions, and determine the best format and timing for your residency. Most applicants find this conversation clarifying and reassuring.

4

Placement & Preparation

If both parties agree to proceed, the community identifies the most appropriate nucleo and timing for your residency, and sends you a preparation package including practical information, reading recommendations, and guidance on what to bring. You will be connected with a community contact person who can answer questions in the weeks before your arrival.

5

Arrival & Orientation

Your first days at Damanhur include a structured orientation period — meeting your host nucleo, understanding the daily rhythms and expectations, touring the community's various facilities and sacred spaces, and beginning to participate in community life at a gentle pace. An assigned community mentor is available throughout your residency for support, guidance, and honest conversation.

What to Expect

We believe in honest preparation. Here is a frank description of what residency at Damanhur typically involves — including the challenges as well as the extraordinary richness of the experience.

The Gifts of Residency

  • Genuine friendship — community members become real friends, not just hosts
  • Participation in a life shaped by genuine values and purpose
  • Access to the Temples at times unavailable to regular visitors, including dawn and dusk ceremonies
  • Learning opportunities in organic farming, traditional crafts, artistic practice, and spiritual development
  • The experience of being genuinely known and cared for by a community
  • Regular participation in Damanhurian cultural life — music, theatre, festivals, ceremonies
  • Slowing down from the pace of modern life in a beautiful natural setting
  • The discovery of your own unsuspected capacities for community living

The Challenges of Residency

  • Community life involves compromising individual preference for collective need — this requires genuine maturity
  • Living in close proximity with others reveals patterns in oneself that comfortable conventional life allows one to avoid
  • The pace of community decision-making can be slow and frustrating for those accustomed to acting alone
  • Language barriers can occasionally frustrate — while most community members speak English, some don't
  • The valley's rural location means limited access to the entertainments and conveniences of urban life
  • Community expectations around work contribution are real and must be honored
  • Occasional periods of isolation or homesickness are normal, particularly in the first few weeks

Community Expectations

A meaningful residency is a two-way commitment. Damanhur commits to welcoming you fully, providing excellent support and guidance, and creating the conditions for genuine learning and growth. In return, we ask for several specific commitments from residents.

⏰

Work Contribution

All residents contribute to the community's daily work. The standard expectation is 5-6 hours of community work per day (for full work exchange placements) or a negotiated contribution based on the type of residency and any financial arrangement made. Work assignments are discussed with the integration coordinator and matched as well as possible to your skills and interests while meeting community needs.

🤝

Community Participation

Residents are expected to genuinely participate in community life — attending meals, joining evening activities, participating in the cultural and social events that are central to Damanhurian life. This is not an obligation imposed from outside but a recognition that the richness of community experience depends on the active participation of everyone. Withdrawal and isolation undermine both your experience and the community's.

📖

Openness & Learning

We ask that residents approach Damanhurian life with genuine openness — not passive agreement with everything they encounter, but a willingness to genuinely engage with ideas, practices, and people that may be different from anything in their previous experience. This includes a willingness to examine one's own assumptions, to receive feedback graciously, and to let the experience actually change you.

Housing & Meals

Accommodation at Damanhur ranges from simple but comfortable guesthouse rooms to integration within a full nucleo household. All options include full meal provision from the community's organic food production.

Accommodation Options

  • Guesthouse room: Simple private room (15-20m²) in a dedicated guest building, with shared bathroom facilities. Suitable for short-term stays and initial residency periods.
  • Nucleo integration: A room or small apartment within a full residential nucleo, sharing all household spaces and daily life with community members. Most immersive option.
  • Guest apartment: A small self-contained apartment within community property, offering more privacy while still participating in communal meals and activities.
  • Family accommodation: Larger apartments for families or groups, available in some nucleos with advance arrangement.

Meals & Food

All residency types include full meal provision — three meals per day from the community's organic kitchen. The food is primarily plant-based and prepared from community-grown or locally sourced organic ingredients. Dietary requirements (vegan, gluten-free, common allergens) are accommodated with advance notice.

  • Breakfast: 7:00-8:30am — bread, preserves, fruit, herbal teas
  • Lunch: 12:30-2:00pm — the main meal, three courses, communal
  • Dinner: 7:00-8:30pm — lighter meal, often with the host nucleo
  • Unlimited herbal teas and fresh water throughout the day
  • Weekly community feast with special preparations on Sundays
