UNESCO Advisory Panel Recommends Temples of Humankind for World Heritage Consideration
An independent advisory panel convened by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has formally recommended that the Temples of Humankind at Damanhur be placed on Italy's Tentative List for World Heritage status. The recommendation, which follows a three-year assessment period, cites the temples as "an extraordinary example of 20th and 21st century communal art and spiritual architecture, representing a unique convergence of human creativity and collective vision."
The temples, excavated by hand in secret between 1978 and 1992 beneath the hills of Vidracco in the Canavese district of northern Italy, comprise nine interconnected halls spanning approximately 8,500 square metres. Each hall is devoted to a different aspect of human experience and is decorated with mosaics, stained glass, sculptures, and paintings created entirely by Damanhur citizens.
